Education
Dear Educators,
I hope that you and your families are staying well and healthy. These are certainly challenging times, especially for our educators. The term “educators” has certainly been expanded and it has grown to include not only our wonderful teachers in the traditional classroom however it has now grown to include parents and guardians who have assumed a dual role. Our aim here at the President James K. Polk State Historic Site, is to give you additional resources that you can use in the “virtual” classroom to enhance your students understanding of North Carolina and American History. We strive to develop interactive and engaging resources that will bring the history of the Carolina Backcountry, the story of the Presidency, and a diverse understanding of the past to your students. On our website, you will find all of these resources and programs that we have created to assist you in your teaching and learn how you and your students can connect with history and with us! In addition to on-demand resources you can integrate into your lesson plans, we gladly host on-site field trips for your students to allow them the chance to see our historic spaces and engage directly with our knowledgeable staff and volunteers. If you have any questions for me or my staff, please feel free to reach out to us either through email at [email protected] or you can call us at 704-889-7145. We would be glad to help cater an experience that will benefit you and your students. I hope that you remain safe and healthy and hopefully, in the not too distant future, we can see you again at the museum. All the best! Scott Warren

School Tours
A field trip to the President James K. Polk SHS is both educational and interactive! While visiting our site your students will learn about President Polk and what life was like on a small farm in the Carolina Backcountry. Students will learn about the Polks; their Scots-Irish background; their stories of migration; Violet and Luce and the other enslaved people who labored here; how they cooked; what chores would boys and girls be responsible for; and generally how life would have been different in some ways and quite similar in others.
